Typha

Location: Cotswolds, England
Material: Oak
The plant Typha more commonly known as cattail is the source of inspiration for this site-specific artwork. The genus is largely distributed in the Northern Hemisphere, where it is found in a variety of wetland habitats. The idea was to incorporate the unmistakable “fuzzy head” portion of the Cattail and create a gigantic hybrid, placing it out in the lake. The pod like forms “cattails” are carved in such a way as to mimic the forms of the delicate and intricate patterns created by the Fall Cankerworm, (moth) who lay their eggs on the limbs of trees. Cankerworms, commonly known as inchworms, are small insects that feed on the leaves of many common trees in North America.
